Luxury Closet Design: Island, Glass Fronts and Boutique Lighting

Luxury is the most requested style in the app and the most expensive to actually build. It is defined by three things: a center island, glass-front display cabinets, and layered light. Everything else is finish. If the room cannot fit an island with 36 inches of clearance on every side, the style will not read no matter what wood you pick.

How to recognise a luxury closet

  • Center island with drawers, often with a stone top
  • Glass or fluted-glass display doors over bags and shoes
  • Two light layers: a decorative fixture plus LED inside the cabinets
  • Dark stained wood or a high-contrast two-tone
  • A seat: bench, ottoman or upholstered island end

The island alone runs $2,500 to $8,000 installed. Glass fronts add roughly 30 percent over solid fronts.

Best for
Walk-ins of 100 sq ft or more, primary bedrooms, and rooms being converted from a spare bedroom.
Skip it if
The room is under 8 ft wide. Skip the island and use the boutique style instead.

Luxury closet design questions

How much space does a closet island need?+

A 24 in. deep island needs 36 in. of walkway on each side, so the room has to be at least 8 ft wide before an island makes sense. Under that, a narrow dresser against the end wall gives you the same drawers without blocking the walkway.

Are glass cabinet fronts practical?+

For bags, shoes and folded knits, yes, and they are the single fastest way to make a closet look expensive. For everyday clothes, no, because you now have to keep them styled. Most builds use glass on one bay and solid fronts everywhere else.
