Kids Closet Design: Rod Heights That Grow With the Child

A kids closet has a design constraint no other closet has: the user is a moving target. A rod at 30 inches works for a three-year-old and is useless at ten. Build for adjustability once and you skip two rebuilds, and put everything the child is meant to manage themselves below 48 inches.

Kids Closet dimensions

These are the numbers the app's planner uses when it lays out a kids closet.

MeasurementValueWhy it matters
Rod height, ages 2-530 - 34 in.Reachable without a stool
Rod height, ages 6-1040 - 46 in.Second rod above at 72 in. for adult-managed items
Rod height, 11+Standard 40 / 80 in. double hangAt this point it becomes a normal closet
Kids hanger width10 - 12 in.So a 16 in. deep closet is enough until roughly age 10
Hanging clearance needed24 - 30 in.Kids clothes are short. You can stack three tiers where adults fit two
Bin shelf spacing12 - 14 in.Sized to an open-front fabric bin
Self-serve zoneBelow 48 in.Everything the child puts away themselves goes here

How to lay it out

  1. 1Adjustable rods on a pin or track system. Plan on moving them twice.
  2. 2Open bins instead of drawers up to about age 7. A lid is a reason not to put something away.
  3. 3Shoes on the floor in a low open cubby, not on a shelf they cannot see.
  4. 4Top shelf at 72 in. and above for outgrown clothes, next-size-up bins and things the child should not reach.

What goes wrong

  • One rod at 68 in., which means an adult has to be involved with every item of clothing for eight years.
  • Deep drawers, where clothes get buried and never rotate.
  • Building for the child's current height instead of installing an adjustable system.
  • No bin for outgrown clothes, which is why they stay in the closet for another year.

Styles that work in a kids closet

Not every style fits every space. These three do, and each page has the material list and the cost per linear foot.

Kids Closet questions

How high should a rod be in a kids closet?+

About 30 to 34 inches for preschoolers and 40 to 46 inches for early elementary. The point is that the child can hang their own clothes, which stops working the moment the rod goes above their shoulder.

Do kids closets need to be as deep as adult closets?+

No. Children's hangers are 10 to 12 inches wide, so a 16 to 18 inch closet works fine until roughly age 10. If the closet is already 24 inches deep, use the extra depth for a bin shelf behind the hanging rather than leaving it empty.

Bins or drawers for kids?+

Open bins until about age 7. Anything with a lid, a runner or a handle adds a step, and the extra step is where the system breaks down. Move to drawers once the child is folding their own clothes.
