Linen Closet Design: Shelf Depth, Spacing and What Actually Fits

A linen closet fails for one reason: the shelves are too deep and too far apart, so you end up with towers of towels that collapse when you pull from the middle. The fix is shallower shelves, more of them, and dividing the width so a stack has a wall on each side.

Linen Closet dimensions

These are the numbers the app's planner uses when it lays out a linen closet.

MeasurementValueWhy it matters
Shelf depth14 - 16 in.A folded bath towel is 12 in. deep. 24 in. means two rows and you never see the back one
Closet depth16 - 24 in.If the framing gives you 24 in., use the back 8 in. for bins, not open shelf
Shelf spacing, towels13 - 16 in.Fits a stack of 4 to 5 folded bath towels
Shelf spacing, sheets12 - 13 in.One folded set per stack, sorted by bed size
Shelf spacing, bulk18 - 20 in.Bottom shelf, for comforters and pillows
Width per stack12 - 16 in.Add a vertical divider so stacks cannot lean
Shelf thickness3/4 in.Linen is heavy. Over 32 in. of span you need a center support

How to lay it out

  1. 1Bottom 20 in.: comforters, pillows, spare blankets, in bins.
  2. 2Middle at eye level: bath towels and the sheet sets you use weekly.
  3. 3Top: guest linens and off-season blankets, labeled, in a lidded bin.
  4. 4Divide the width vertically every 12 to 16 in. so nothing leans on anything else.

What goes wrong

  • 24 in. deep shelves. The back half becomes archaeological.
  • One 20 in. gap between shelves. You get one tall unstable stack instead of two stable ones.
  • Storing sheet sets loose. Fold each set inside its own pillowcase and the closet stays sorted permanently.
  • Putting the vacuum in the linen closet, which is how it stops being a linen closet.

Styles that work in a linen closet

Not every style fits every space. These three do, and each page has the material list and the cost per linear foot.

Linen Closet questions

How deep should linen closet shelves be?+

14 to 16 inches. That is one folded bath towel plus clearance. Standard closets are often framed 24 inches deep, in which case use the extra depth for pull-out bins at the bottom rather than making every shelf 24 inches.

How far apart should linen shelves be?+

12 to 16 inches for towels and sheets, and one 18 to 20 inch bay at the bottom for comforters. Adjustable shelves on a pin system are worth it here more than anywhere else in the house.

How many towels fit on a linen shelf?+

A 16 in. wide by 15 in. deep bay with 14 in. of height holds about 5 folded bath towels in one stack, or roughly 8 hand towels. A 36 in. wide closet with 5 shelves holds a full set for a four-person household with room left over.
