Mudroom Closet Design: Bench Height, Hook Height and Cubby Widths

A mudroom is a queue, not a storage room. Everything about the design comes from the order of operations at the door: sit, take shoes off, hang the coat, drop the bag, leave. Get the bench height and hook height wrong and people stop using it within a week.

How to lay it out

1One cubby per person, labeled. Shared cubbies never work.
2Open under the bench for boots. A door there just means wet boots on the floor in front of it.
3Two hook rows: adult height, and a second row at kid height in the same cubby.
4Upper cabinet with doors above 72 in. for seasonal gear, so the visible zone stays current.

What goes wrong

Hanging rods instead of hooks. Nobody puts a wet coat on a hanger on the way in.
A 20 in. bench, which is too tall to take boots off on.
A closed bottom, so wet boots either go inside a cabinet or on the floor.
Sizing for the household you have now and forgetting sports gear.

How high should mudroom hooks be?+

60 to 66 inches for adults and a second row at 36 to 48 inches for children. If the hooks sit behind a bench, measure from the bench: a hook needs to clear a seated adult's head, which is roughly 36 inches above the seat.

How wide should each cubby be?+

12 to 16 inches per person. That is one winter coat on a hook plus a backpack below. Under 12 inches coats overlap and the whole thing turns into a pile.

Should a mudroom closet have doors?+

Only above 72 inches, for seasonal storage. The daily zone has to be open, because any door is a step people skip when their hands are full and their shoes are wet.
